Chai Affogato

Updated: Apr 14, 2023

Enjoy this Chai-flavored dessert on a warm Spring day!

The word Affogato means "drowned" in Italian. Traditionally, Affogato is an Italian dessert created by pouring hot espresso over the top of vanilla gelato or ice cream. Essentially, 'drowning' the cold treat in the hot beverage. The origin of the dessert is unknown, but we do know that the concept became popular in Italy in the 1950s.

Chai Drowned

Recently, it has become a popular practice to replace the espresso aspect of this tasty treat with a hot chai. It makes for a considerably milder caffeine and sugar experience, reducing the chance of the jitters and skyrocketing anxiety afterwords.

Spicy Chai

Catalyst Tea Company's very own Spicy Chai black tea blend makes for the perfect Affogato topper to your favorite vanilla ice cream. You can enjoy this warming and fragrant tea, the history of which dates back thousands of years, while indulging in a classically simple dessert.

Just steep one tablespoon of the blend in 8 ounces of hot water for three to four minutes, or until desired strength, and then pour over a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. Add a drizzle of honey overtop for extra sweetness.

Tea Time

In addition to our Spicy Chai you might also try spicing up your next bowl of vanilla ice cream with our Apple Chai, or our Pumpkin Spice Chai black tea blends. Have you ever had a chai or traditional Affogato before? Which do you prefer? Let us know in the comments!
